In microelectronics there is a clear exponential development in the number of transistors per chip, which has been doubling every two years on average during the last four decades. This phenomenon is known as Moore’s law. In Photonics we observe a similar development, albeit in an early stage. - says Prof. Meint Smit from Institute for Photonic Integration - TU Eindhoven and colleagues Laser Photonics Rev. 6, No. 1, 1–13 (2012).
